Copyright and AI content
Who actually owns a text or an image made by AI? When is it a problem and how do you cover yourself? An overview without the myths and without the panic.
Who owns AI content
In Czechia and the EU, the author of a work is a human being. A purely AI-made creation usually does not get classic copyright protection. In practice: you can generally use it, but you may not hold exclusive rights to it as if it were your own work.
Where the risk is
- AI generates something suspiciously close to a protected work or a brand.
- An image in the style of a specific living artist.
- Other people's logos and trademarks.
How to cover yourself
- Add your own contribution - edit it, add to it, assemble it.
- Do not use other people's brands and logos.
- For the things that matter (your company logo) go with an original from a designer.
- Read the tool's terms on commercial use.
Mind the input too
Do not feed protected content you have no right to into an AI - the risk is not only on the output side.
With AI content, common sense applies: the more of your own input there is and the fewer other people's brands, the better you sleep.
