APIs and keys for complete beginners
The moment you want to plug AI into your own app or automation, you hit APIs and keys. No need to worry - here it is in plain language.
What an API is
The way programs talk to each other. AI has an API: you send text, it returns an answer. That is how AI can be put almost anywhere - into a website, an app, an automation.
What an API key is
Something like a password to your account with the AI provider. A program identifies itself with it and you pay per use (per tokens, see the glossary).
How not to burn through your credit
- Set spending limits.
- Use a cheaper model wherever it is good enough.
- Do not send needlessly long inputs.
- Watch your usage so nothing surprises you.
Keeping the key safe
The key never put it into front-end code or anywhere public, give every project its own (see one key per project) and if one leaks, revoke it immediately.
When it even comes up
Once you start building your own app or automation. For everyday use a finished app is enough and keys never come up.
An API key is like your house key. Useful, until you leave it hanging in the door.
