Speed and mobile: what a site stands or falls on

Half your visitors leave a slow mobile site before it even loads. These are the two things a site stands or falls on - and how to stay on top of them.

Mobile first

Most people look at your site on a phone. On a small screen it has to be readable and thumb-friendly - big type, enough room around buttons, no horizontal scrolling.

Speed = money

A slow site means a lost customer and a worse position on Google on top. A few extra seconds of loading and the person is off to the competition.

How to find out

Open PageSpeed Insights (free from Google) and above all try the site on your own phone. Whatever annoys you will drive a customer away too.

What slows things down most often

Big unoptimised images, piles of unnecessary scripts and cheap, bloated templates. Usually shrinking the images and slimming the site is enough.

What to watch out for

However beautiful a site is, if it will not load on a phone or is awkward to use, it is worthless. Speed and mobile are not a detail - they are the foundation.

The best website is not the prettiest. It is the one that loads instantly on a phone and can be used one-handed.
