Where AI fails and how not to get burned
AI is powerful, and it can do real damage. Here are the actual risks and, above all, how to keep them in check - so you get the upside without the nasty surprises.
The real risks
- Hallucination - a confidently delivered falsehood.
- Data leaks - sensitive information ending up where it should not.
- Dependence - what happens if the tool goes down or the price goes up.
- Reputation - an embarrassing or wrong output going public.
- Costs running away - with an API and no limits set.
How to keep them in check
- On anything important, always have a person approve the output.
- Check the facts, numbers and names above all.
- Guard your data and your keys (see the basics course).
- Keep a plan B in case of an outage, and test it.
The most common mess
Pushing AI output straight out without review. One bad answer to a customer or one factual error in a document does more damage than all the time you saved.
What to watch out for
Risks do not mean not using AI. They mean using it with your head, and with checks in the right places.
AI does not burn the person who avoids it. It burns the person who trusts it blindly. The difference is one extra check.
