ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini: which one and what for

You do not need to know them all. Here are the main players, what each is good at and where to start - so you do not pay for nothing.

Good news: they all work much the same

You type a question or a task into a box and it answers. The differences are mostly in the details, the price and what each tool suits best. Switching between them is easy, so there is no wrong choice to be afraid of.

The main tools (2026)

  • ChatGPT (OpenAI) - the best known and the most all-round. Text, images, files, plenty of add-ons. A safe default.
  • Claude (Anthropic) - excellent at long texts and working with documents. I use it as the brain of my own AI apps.
  • Gemini (Google) - wired into Google (Gmail, Docs, search). Great if you already live in Google.
  • Copilot (Microsoft) - AI right inside Word, Excel and Windows. A fit for companies built on Microsoft.
  • Perplexity - more of a smart search engine with links to sources, good for research.

Free vs paid

Each one has a free tier - plenty for trying things out and for everyday work. The paid tier (around 500 CZK, roughly €20 a month) adds a smarter model, more capacity, image generation and file handling.

From experience: start free and only pay once you hit the ceiling - when you run out of messages or the quality is not enough. That is when a subscription pays off.

Which one to pick

  • You do not want to think about it: take ChatGPT or Claude. Either one handles 95 % of everyday work.
  • You write a lot, and long documents: Claude.
  • You live in Google or Microsoft: Gemini, or rather Copilot.
Do not go looking for "the best AI". Pick one, learn it properly, and only then compare. The gap between "I know one" and "I know none" is far bigger than the gap between the tools.
