The 80/20 rule: do 20 % of the work, get 80 % of the results

Most of what earns you money comes from a small part of your work. The rest is grind that has to happen but brings nothing on its own. And that grind is exactly what can now run itself.

What the 80/20 rule is

The Pareto principle says that roughly 80 % of the results come from 20 % of the causes. It is not an exact number, it is a pattern you see everywhere:

  • 20 % of customers make 80 % of the revenue.
  • 20 % of products drive 80 % of the profit.
  • 20 % of your tasks move the business forward, the other 80 % just keep it running.

Turn it around and you get something quite liberating: do that 20 % well and you have 80 % of the result. The rest does not need a human.

You do not have to do more. You have to do more of the right thing - and let the rest run itself.

Where your 20 % is

The important part is usually work nobody can do for you: decisions, customer relationships, product quality, the direction of the business. This is where it pays to be there personally and fully.

It is easy to spot - ask yourself: "If someone else (or a machine) did this, would the business lose value?" For your 20 % the answer is yes. For the rest, no.

That 80 % is your automation candidate

The other 80 % is usually repetitive, predictable grind: retyping data, forwarding emails, issuing invoices, logging enquiries, reports. It has to happen, but it does not need your brain - it just needs to run.

And that is exactly what automation and AI agents. It gets set up once and then the work runs itself: an enquiry is logged, an invoice goes out, a report is waiting in the morning, an alert lands straight on your phone.

Automation = keep the results, drop the grind

Here is the main idea. If you automate that 80 % of routine work automate, the results stay - but the time and energy it cost you come back. Nothing gets worse, it just stops eating your capacity.

A small example: every enquiry that comes through this site logs itself and sends me an alert. I do not have to watch my inbox - and I still reply fast. A few minutes a day that add up to days over a year.

What to do with the freed capacity

And now the best part. When automation gives you a big chunk of capacity back, you do not have to "save" it - you can invest it in another 20 %that bring new growth: a new product, more customers, a better offer, the things there was never time for.

That is how leverage works: you do not work more hours, you move them out of routine and into the things that actually move the business.

What is a person doing at your company that they should not have to?

Tell me what keeps repeating at your place. I will find your 80 % of grind, automate it, and you get time back for what matters. No-obligation estimate within 24 hours.
