AI for hiring and job ads
When you are hiring into a five-person company, you have no HR and no time. AI takes the dullest parts of hiring off you, but you have to do the deciding.
A job ad people finish reading
Most small business job ads read like a list of duties. People care about something else: what they will be doing on a Tuesday morning, with whom, for how much and why here of all places. Try this prompt:
Write a job ad for the role of [role] at a [industry] company in [city], 5 people, family atmosphere. The person we want: [description]. We offer: [salary, benefits]. Write in a warm, direct tone, no filler like 'dynamic team'. Structure: what you would work on here, what a normal day looks like, who we are looking for, what we offer, how to get in touch. 350 words max.
Put the salary range in the ad. Without it half the people will not reply and the other half all ask the same question.
Screening CVs
AI turns a stack of CVs into a clear table: name, years of experience, three relevant things, three question marks. That saves you an hour of reading. What not to let AI do: rejecting people. A model leans towards what it saw in the data and will happily cut your most interesting candidate because their path was unusual.
Interview questions
Have six questions prepared about what the person will actually be doing, plus a scenario from your own experience. In the trades or in hospitality a practical test works best, and AI can help you come up with the brief for it.
Replies to unsuccessful candidates
We all put this off, and yet it is the cheapest advertising a company has. Have a short, decent, specific reply written, read it through and send it within a week. People remember and they pass it on.
Where the limits are
- Do not put a whole CV with a name, an address and a date of birth into a prompt when you do not need to. That is somebody else's personal data.
- Automated assessment of candidates is a sensitive area in the EU (the AI Act) - the decision has to stay with a human.
- Never judge by age, gender, name or photo. Not through AI, not any other way.
AI hires a person about as well as a microwave cooks dinner. It saves time, but you are still the one choosing.
